Women around the country are fasting for their other-half. This is the day of Karwa Chauth (Karva Chauth) and like almost all other celebrations, even this one is celebrated with a lot of zeal. Karwa Chauth falls on the fourth day of the Kartik month and on this day women keeps fast for the entire day. She can neither drink nor eat on this day. It is believed that if the woman does this, her husband gets longer and prosperous life. There are many stories revolving around this day. One of them is about a woman named Karva whose husband was caught by a crocodile. She used cotton yarn to stop the crocodile and then asked Yama to kill the crocodile and send it to hell. However, Yama refused and Karva threatened to curse him. Afraid Yama sent crocodile to hell. And Karva enjoyed many years of wedded bliss with her husband.
Another story is of Savitri, who followed Yama to take her dead husband back. However, Yama refused to give her husband’s body back and asked her to ask any other boon. Savitri asked Yama to bless her with children and he agreed. Now, being a Pati-Vrata wife, how Savitri could have kids with another man. So, Yama gave Savitri’s husband back to her.
There are many other stories revolving around but in India, festivals are incomplete without food and Bollywood songs. Though in this festival women are not allowed to eat, they can, of course, listen to some good Karwa Chauth songs. Over the years, Bollywood has shown numerous songs based on Karwa Chauth. But which is that one song that reminds you of this day — Mehndi Laga Kar Rakhna from DDLJ or Chand Chupa Badal Mein from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam? This song is perfect to set your mood for the day. Tumhi Mere Mandir Tumhi Meri Puja Tumhi Devta Ho is another beautiful song featuring Nutan and Sunil Dutt from the film Khandan. The song was sung by Lata Mangeshkar.
