Game of Thrones premiered its season 7 this weekend and it is all that fans can talk about. Right from Arya Stark’s golden moment in the first five minutes, or Daenerys Targaryen finally stepping foot on the land that she was “born to rule,” the episode “Dragonstone” was an instant fan-favourite. However, the episode happens to be a lot more mind-blowing than it seems. Show makers David Benioff and DB Weiss are known to hide little clues for fans in the show and they did not hold back from doing the same with the season 7 premiere. And, as expected, those little clues have birthed several new Game of Thrones fan theories.
The dragonglass cave
The first and most obvious observation people have made is about the text from those books in the restricted section of the Citadel library that Sam stole (how Hermione of him). As Sam flips through the pages, he stumbles upon the details of a massive Dragonglass reserve at Dragonstone.
Some eagle-eyed fans pointed out the Dragonstone mine from the picture in the books looks eerily familiar to the cave at Dragonstone. You know, the very cave where Lady Melisandre lied on her back to allow her shadow baby to crawl out of her…
If that’s true and since Sam’s sending a raven to alert Jon about the dragonglass mine, the King in the North is going to have to work with auntie Dany, currently seated at Dragonstone, to extract it.
The cure for Greyscale
Another one from the books that nearly everyone missed out on, fans have surmised that Sam will be the one to discover the cure for Greyscale from one of the books he stole from the Citadel library. The page before the one with the mention of dragonglass in Dragonstone, which was conveniently partially cut from the frame, talks about the use of “dragonglass as a cure” for an “illness.”
While they are all half-sentences, the phrases “harm incurs from the ingestion”, “discount the harm to the gullible” and “better spent on practical treatments” is enough to lead us in the direction that dragonglass is a possible cure for Greyscale. Why else would Ser Jorah Mormont be conveniently placed in a lowly cell at the Citadel?
Also backing this theory is the fact that the only person who has suffered from Greyscale and lived is Princess Shireen Baratheon. Well, she died later but that had more to do with a certain Lady in Red than the ailment itself. Anyway, where did Shireen grow up? DRAGON-FREAKING-STONE! The only place we know has Dragonglass. It’s possible Stannis Baratheon discovered it on the island and used it to cure his daughter. All we need is to get Jorah to Dragonstone and voila! Plus, we’ll possibly get a Jorah-Dany reunion because of this.
Valyrian Steel
Remember at Hardhome when all the men were sh*tting bricks when an army of the dead was chasing after them? It seemed like the then-Lord Commander Jon Snow was really in trouble until he swung Longclaw and slew the White Walker he crossed swords with.
Longclaw was forged out of Valyrian Steel, a metal that involves the old magic of the Valyrians in its making. But, how can Valyrian Steel kill a wight? The only other thing that is known to be able to do this is Dragonglass. One theory suggests that they are one and the same.
As per the theory, Valyrian Steel has bits of dragonglass in it and since we are theorising things, also involves the fiery breath of a dragon. We didn’t have any of this for centuries after the Doom of Valyria but now, we happen to have all the ingredients. So now there can be more than a handful of Valyrian Steel swords.
Melisandre is at Dragonstone
A new theory suggests that Daenerys is not alone at Dragonstone. As per the theory, Lady Melisandre, after having been banished by Jon Snow in the last season, fled to Dragonstone. Why? Because, where else would she go? It’s the only place she is familiar with where no one wants to kill her and, with Daenerys arriving, she has some new taker of the Iron Throne to swarm with her ‘Lord of Light’ garbage. There’s also this shot from the trailer where it can clearly be seen that she is in fact at Dragonstone so, there’s that!
Sansa Stark’s hairstyle
Fans have always noticed that Sansa’s hair style always mimics those who she has aligned herself with. First, it was Cersie when she was in Kings Landing, later she channeled Margaery Tyrell’s hairdo when they became friend. In season 7, fans noticed that Sansa’s hair looks a lot like Cersei Lannister’s again (the version from season 3).
In the episode, Jon also points out that she seems to admire Cersei to which she says, “I learnt a great deal from her.” Even actress Sophie Turner stated that Sansa will be quite “unlikeable” this season. Could it be that she’s the next Cersei Lannister?
