A middle-aged man sits silently as he listens to businessmen crib about their losses, teens cry about heartbreak and women talk about their day. In an attention-seeking world, all this man does is listen. That’s his job.
Tarun Dudeja’s 13-minute movie Listener narrates the story of a man (played by Kumud Mishra) who is paid to listen to people.
The story is an idea that have a lot of translations. The protagonist is an ace story teller for his daughter, but a silent listener for the rest of the world. One could conclude that this is a narrative on how lonely people really are. It can also be construed as a portrayal of relationships and how people have different faces at different courses of life. With no set ‘story-line’, this short film can have various interpretations.
The movie has already won laurels at festivals like Best Film at the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival, Mumbai and Best Cinematography award in 8th Jaipur International Film Festival. It is also the official selection at film festivals like 16th New York Indian Film Festival, 22nd International Short film Week, Germany and 17th Circolo Sogni International Short film festival, Ravenna.
