It’s that time of the year, when the Hollywood awards season kicks off. With the Golden Globes 2019 taking place in Los Angeles, we’ve had our first pointers about the films that will make a big splash in the season leading up to the Oscars next month. The red carpet at the 76th Golden Globes saw an unlikely/amusing character in the form of a ‘server’, who repeatedly found ways to bomb celebrity pictures. Twitter picked up on her in no time.
The evening was hosted by Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh, and it took no time for them to rip on Lady Gaga’s repeated answer about how Bradley Cooper was that ‘one person in a room of hundred individuals, who would place his blind faith on her’ while Gaga screamed out “it’s true!” equal parts embarrassed and laughing along.
In a year where Killing Eve became one of the critical darlings on TV, Sandra Oh created history by becoming the first host of Asian descent at the Golden Globes who was also nominated during the evening. The evening went on to become even better for Oh, who won her category of Best Actress (TV Drama) and went on to express limitless gratitude to her parents… who happened to be in the same room, accompanying their actress daughter.
Jeff Bridges was presented the Cecil B. DeMille award by his Hell Or High Water co-star, Chris Pine. The Hollywood veteran, most famous for his character called The Dude (from The Big Lebowski), went on a cheerful rant about ‘doing your bit to steer the ship’.
Sony’s Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse picked up the trophy for the Best Animated Feature, making it only the third non-Pixar/non-Disney winner in this category. Game of Thrones star, Richard Madden, picked up Best Actor in a limited series for Netflix’s Bodyguard. While, the Best Actress in the same category went Patricia Arquette for Escape From Dannemora.
The acting honours were a little more interesting, with Christian Bale picking up Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) for his rendition of Dick Cheney in Vice. While the Best Actress went to Olivia Colman for her role in Yorgos Lanthimos’s ‘The Favourite‘. Rami Malek swept Best Actor (Drama) for his acutely-observed portrayal of Freddie Mercury and Glenn Close won it for The Wife. Much to everyone’s surprise, Bohemian Rhapsody beat both A Star Is Born and Black Panther for Best Picture (Drama) and cast a doubt over everyone who was sure about Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut.
2019 Golden Globes was a rather damp affair, with no one really coming up with a speech that challenged the status-quo of the self aggrandizing awards ceremony. The only memorable bit was probably Sandra Oh getting sentimental about the massive strides taken by Hollywood towards being inclusive, which has allowed her this privilege.
