Dev Patel bags Oscar nomination for Lion, becomes 3rd Indian origin actor to achieve this feat

Dev Patel has done India proud after the 26-year old actor bagged a nomination for his performance in Lion. Do you think he will win?

Actor Dev Patel got nominated for the Academy Awards owing to his performance in Lion. He bagged a nomination in the best supporting actor category. What makes this nomination extremely special for India is because Dev Patel is only the third actor of Indian descent to have made the cut. The last time an Indian origin star was nominated was 13 years ago, when Ben Kingsley  was nominated in 2004 for House of Sand and Fog. Before Kingsley in 2004, the only other Oscar nominee of Indian descent was The Dark Angel star Merle Oberon, back in 1935.

By making it to the nominations, Dev has also become the 13th Asian actor to achieve this feat. The 26-year-old actor played the role of Saroo Brierley, a man who embarks on a journey to his roots, in the film based on a true story. Lion has been based on a non-fiction book, A Long Way Home, written by Saroo Brierley and Larry Buttrose. Lion was applauded by critics with the way it gave an artistic touch to a emotional film.

His portrayal of Brierley got Dev a nomination in Golden Globes as well but he lost to Aaron Taylor-Johnson of Nocturnal Animals. After the awards, Dev told PTI that he didn’t fret about losing at the Golden Globes and just enjoyed the nominations.

Eight years ago, Dev attended the prestigious award function when his film Slumdog Millionaire  swept the award in 2009. Though, he was not nominated, he made for a meaningful trip.

Patel has got stiff competition from Mahershala Ali for Moonlight.

Well it is sure that many from India would be rooting for Dev Patel. Let us hope he wins.
