Golden Globe Awards 2017 Predictions: Find out who’s winning this year

The 74th Golden Globe Awards are about to go down and here's your guide to who can/cannot win.

The 74th Golden Globe Awards are about to go down but, before they do, let’s do a quick check on who has good chances of winning big this year. Some of these are quite obvious while some other competitors are real neck-and-neck. Check out our predictions for this year’s Golden Globe winners.

Best Actor – Drama

Casey Affleck – Manchester by the Sea as Lee Chandler
Joel Edgerton – Loving as Richard Loving
Andrew Garfield – Hacksaw Ridge as Desmond T. Doss
Viggo Mortensen – Captain Fantastic as Ben Cash
Denzel Washington – Fences as Troy Maxson

Our Prediction: Casey Affleck

Not to offend anyone else’s performances. Denzel Washington and Andrew Garfield were especially great but, we’re going to go with the brilliant portrayal of a broke, divorced man by Casey Affleck.

Best Actress – Drama

Amy Adams, Arrival
Jessica Chastain, Miss Sloane
Isabelle Huppert, Elle
Ruth Negga, Loving
Natalie Portman, Jackie

Our Prediction: Natalie Portman

Portman wins it. Hands down. No questions asked. Period!

Best Actor – Comedy or Musical

Colin Farrell – The Lobster as David
Ryan Gosling – La La Land as Sebastian Wilder
Hugh Grant – Florence Foster Jenkins as St. Clair Bayfield
Jonah Hill – War Dogs as Efraim Diveroli
Ryan Reynolds – Deadpool as Wade Wilson/Deadpool

Our Prediction: Ryan Gosling

This is a no-brainer. Ryan Gosling, everyone! After La La Land, it is unquestionable to say that Gosling is one of the most powerful actors in Hollywood right now.

Best Actress – Comedy or Musical

Annette Bening – 20th Century Women as Dorothea Fields
Lily Collins – Rules Don’t Apply as Marla Mabrey
Hailee Steinfeld – The Edge of Seventeen as Nadine Franklin
Emma Stone – La La Land as Mia Dolan
Meryl Streep – Florence Foster Jenkins as Florence Foster Jenkins

Our Prediction: Emma Stone

Yes, we are placing our bets against Meryl Streep (the most nominated person for the Golden Globes ever) and that should highlight just how serious we are about Emma Stone’s performance in La La Land.

Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy

Our Prediction: La La Land

This one’s easy. As much as Marvel fans want Deadpool to win, it’s La La Land all the way! This Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling starrer is a magical experience in its own. Deadpool may be in fact the worst pick given the other nominees. Regardless of the fact that the other films featured remarkable performances from Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool), Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins) and Annette Bening (20th Century Women), La La Land is simply the perfect fit for this category.

Best Motion Picture – Drama

Hacksaw Ridge
Hell or High Water
Lion
Manchester by the Sea
Moonlight

Our Prediction: Manchester by the Sea

Despite the brilliance of Moonlight (which, could also win), Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester by the Sea could easily grab the win. Hacksaw Ridge, Hell or High Water and Lion were all strong competitors but seeing the beautiful, not-so-accommodating relationship between an uncle and a nephew, it would be wrong if any other film won the award.

Best Motion Picture – Animated

Our Prediction: Zootopia

Yes, Moana has the hype at its disposal because it’s centred around a young female lead but Zootopia was a much more fun experience overall. Although, Moana could also win just as easily.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture

Viola Davis, Fences
Naomie Harris, Moonlight
Nicole Kidman, Lion
Octavia Spencer, Hidden Figures
Michelle Williams, Manchester by the Sea

Our Prediction: Viola Davis

Naomi Harris comes close to winning this but, for us, Viola Davis’ performance in Fences does it. The How To Get Away With Murder actress has already won several awards for her rendition of Rose Maxson in August Wilson’s Fences.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture

Mahershala Ali, Moonlight
Jeff Bridges, Hell or High Water
Simon Helberg, Florence Foster Jenkins
Dev Patel, Lion
Aaron Taylor Johnson, Nocturnal Animals

Our Prediction: Mahershala Ali

Again, this one is a tough choice but we are going to place our bets on Mahershala Ali. The award could also go to Jeff Bridges for Hell or High Water but, Ali’s performance brought life to the film and was chiefly highlighted by the audience.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama

Caitriona Balfe, Outlander
Claire Foy, The Crown
Keri Russell, Americans
Winona Ryder, Stranger Things

Our Prediction: Winona Ryder

Another tough choice, man this year’s Golden Globes are going to be a real nail-biter. Whether it is Claire Foy for her role as the Queen of England or Evan Rachel Wood from the recent stint of Westworld on HBO, it’s Winona Ryder’s half-neurotic-half-motherly portrayal that really did it for us.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama

Rami Malek, Mr. Robot
Billy Bob Thornton, Goliath
Bob Odenkirk, Better Call Saul
Matthew Rhys, The Americans
Liev Schreiber, Ray Donovan

Our Prediction: Rami Malek

Rami Malek, Bob Odenkirk and Liev Schreiber, all three of them were nominated last year as well, however, none of them won. This year, perhaps it’s time to acknowledge Malek’s somewhat creepy rendition of the delusional hacker, Elliot Alderson.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep

Our Prediction: Julia Louis-Dreyfus

We’ll call it what it is. Wishful thinking. The VPOTUS or Veep has been nominated for the Globes before but, despite her performance having been appreciated at the Emmys over the years, she hasn’t won a Globe Globe yet. It’s time we changed that.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series, or Motion Picture made for Television

Olivia Colman, The Night Manager
Lena Headey, Game of Thrones
Chrissy Metz, This Is Us
Mandy Moore, This Is Us
Thandie Newton, Westworld

Our Prediction: Lena Headey

For crying out loud! Give that woman a Golden Globe already! It is her first nomination and the first individual nomination from the show in years! It is just such a shame… shame… shame…

Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy

Atlanta
Blackish
Mozart in the Jungle
Transparent
Veep

Our Prediction: Veep

The political satire comedy is one of the best humour relief you can get on TV nowadays. With a flawless cast and the actually funny usage of dark humour (a rarity these days), this Armando Iannucci creation certainly deserves a win.

Best Television Series – Drama

Game of Thrones
Stranger Things
This Is Us
Westworld

Our Prediction: Stranger Things

There are better shows than Stranger Things (including our favourite Game of Thrones) on the list but that depends on how you define “better”. Stranger Things is hugely popular among the masses and it has elements of humour, horror, thrill, drama, etc. The show is a complete package and can be entertaining to all ages.

Best Original Song – Motion Picture

“Can’t Stop the Feeling,” Trolls
“City of Stars,” La La Land
“Faith,” Sing
“Gold,” Gold
“How Far I’ll Go,” Moana

Our Prediction: How Far I’ll Go

Auli’i Cravalho’s vocals may not have been the best but, the song is way too good that one can choose to ignore that. Sorry, La La Land, Moana has its name written on this one.

Best Original Score – Motion Picture

Our Prediction: La La Land

Although I personally prefer the soundtrack of Arrival, there’s no doubt that La La Land was a much bigger success in terms of its original score so, we wouldn’t be surprised if they win this one.
