Outlining the true story of American fraudster Bernard Madoff, The Wizard of Lies is an upcoming television drama film. Starring Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Alessandro Nivola, Hank Azaria, Nathan Darrow, Kristen Connolly and Kathrine Narducci, The Wizard of Lies is based on Diana B. Henriques’ novel of the same name.
According to the official synopsis of the film, DeNiro’s Madoff gets involved in “largest financial fraud in U.S. history.” DeNiro says in the trailer, “It’s a fraud, basically a big Ponzi scheme.”
“In 2008, stockbroker, investment advisor and financier Bernie Madoff made headlines around the world when he was arrested for perpetrating perhaps the largest financial fraud in U.S. history”
Bernie Madoff’s involvement in the Ponzi scheme led to him being sentenced to 150 years in prison on June 29, 2009, which is the maximum allowed serving time.
The film will also pose as Michelle Pfeiffer’s big Hollywood comeback. The 58-year-old actress, who will be playing the role of Ruth Madoff, was last seen in the 2013 movie crime comedy The Family. Recently, Pfeiffer revealed that her untimely disappearance was due to family issues. She also said that since she got very picky with scripts that nobody wanted to hire her.
The trailer is proof enough that Pfeiffer arrival is going to be very impactful. Combined with DeNiro’s gripping appearance as Bernie, the film definitely looks like one to watch out for. The Wizard of Lies premieres on HBO on May 20, 2017.
