The 89th Academy Awards kickstarted with a bang with the host Jimmy Kimmel taking a fresh jibe at US President Donald Trump during the Oscars 2017 ceremony.

The 89th Academy Awards kickstarted with a bang with the host Jimmy Kimmel taking a fresh jibe at US President Donald Trump. After finishing his flawless rendition of the song Can’t Stop The Feeling from Trolls, Justin Timberlake called upon Kimmel.

The 49-year-old comedian and talk show host didn’t miss the glorious opportunity to attack his newest President, a Hollywood trend nowadays. “I want to say thank you to President Trump,” Kimmel said. He added, “I mean, remember last year when it seemed the Oscars were racist?”

Kimmel was referencing to last year’s controversy which triggered one April Reign to create the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite, which has literally been trending ever since the nominations got announced. However, this year, the Academy’s picks have been more racially diverse with films like Fences, Hidden Figures, Moonlight and the inexistent “Hidden Fences” coming to light. All three movies are up for the Best Picture with Moonlight standing out as the most prospective winner of the coveted award.

US President Donald Trump is a common target at awards ceremonies nowadays. Earlier, stars have taken sharp blows at the President at Grammys, BRITs, BAFTAs and the Golden Globes.

Kimmel went on to say, “Black people saved NASA and white people saved jazz. That’s progress,” while referencing to both Hidden Figures and La La Land.

“The country is divided right now. I’ve been getting a lot of advice, it’s time to bring people together. There’s only one Braveheart in this room, and he’s not going to unite us either,” he said as he pointed out to Mel Gibson sitting in the audience. “You look great, Mel – I think the Scientology is really working.”
