Priyanka Chopra’s Hollywood debut Baywatch was better off when it hadn’t released ’cause the unanimous disapproval of this Seth Gordon film is just embarrassing. Ever since its release, the film has been the centre of incessant worldwide criticism. Even Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron’s appeal combined with that of Priyanka Chopra’s, couldn’t save this film that dug its own grave the moment it was conceived.
While there is nothing essentially wrong with the cast of the film, the main issue that irked everyone was the plot. One can’t expect a slapstick comedy to make sense (at least not all the time), making such a film cannot be a free ticket to whip up any sort of monstrosity you like.
Here are a few highlights from Baywatch that are as ridiculous as… well, everything else in the movie:
1) Why is there Ninja Warrior Course at the beach?
We understand that a lifeguard needs to be super athletic and in shape and all but, the training rounds are a bit extensive. What use does one have of lifting refrigerators in saving people from drowning?
2) Lifeguards whose job description apparently extends to fighting crime, busting drug dealers, saving Earth from an alien invasion, restoring world peace and…
Mitch Buchannon (Dwayne Johnson) is a 40-something guy working at the beach. Perhaps that’s why he’s so attached to it ’cause he has nothing else to do in his life. He and his lifeguards together feel that it is their responsibility to fix anything and everything remotely attached to the beach. So, if you are planning on shooting up the Bay, look out ’cause they’ll come after you.
3) The David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson cameos
The film was banking on crass humour and nostalgia. To accentuate the latter, the film brought in two big shots from the hit 80s TV series, Hasselhoff and Anderson for cameo roles. However, they are so disappointing in their special appearances, they’re practically disposable.
4) Victoria Leeds and her sob story
Leeds’ father decided to hand over the reigns of his business to his son when it was Victoria who wanted (entitled, much?) it more. Rebelling against her sexist father, she moved to America to start dealing drugs ’cause, what else is a girl to do?
5) What was her evil plan again?
We all know she dealt with drugs but that’s just a facade. Her actual plan is to own the entire beach and make it private property. One question though- why is the acquisition of property hidden under the face of a drug dealing scheme? Shouldn’t it be the other way around maybe?
6) Are they constantly re-applying make-up after each run in the water?
With everything going on, the lifeguards actually do find the time to save people from drowning, be it people who fell off a pier or somebody who’s on a burning boat in the middle of the seas. Strangely though through all this, the female cast always looks like they’ve just walked out of magazine covers, without even a hair out of place.
