The teaser trailer for the upcoming film The Mummy is out! Although the teaser doesn’t reveal much, it is pretty clear that this Tom Cruise starrer is going to be nothing like the previous The Mummy films.
The movie will be a reboot of The Mummy franchise. The films have kept Universal Pictures alive over the last some… 85 years. The first film was released back in 1932 which featured Boris Karloff (as the mummy), Zita Johann, David Manners, and Edward van Sloan.
The 1999 remake starring Rachel Weisz, Brendan Fraser, Dwayne Johnson and John Hannah was a huge success and was followed by two sequels: The Mummy Returns (2001) and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008). By the last film, it was quite obvious that the franchise was dead.
The new 16-second teaser trailer doesn’t reveal much about the upcoming film but what we know is that the villain in this film is played by Sofia Boutella (who seems to have weird googly eyes which are the very definition of creepy).
I’m guessing that with this reboot of a reboot, they’ve gone back to the most obvious location of Egypt. Doesn’t seem like the filmmakers have any bright ideas. How many times do you need to reboot the same film? Now, we have to wait for the actual film to see if the villain in this film is better or worse than Arnold Vosloo’s bug-chewing mummy. God! That was disgusting.

This film’s mummy being a female is classic. Did we really need to redo an entire film about it though? How many times can you actually circle around the same topic before it gets boring? You might as well make a daily soap out of it.
According to legend (read: “the plot”), the mummy is an ancient princess who is going to be “bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.”
The film also stars Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, Courtney B. Vance, Russell Crowe and is set to release in 2017.
