This 70s show turns into a movie: Ponch-Jon duo returns in new CHiPs trailer

Despite the old concept and characters, the story for the CHiPs movie seems fresh and as does the humour.

The first trailer for the film revival of 1970’s show CHiPs has been released on Jimmy Kimmel Live. The show, which was lead by the two principal characters Officer Jon Baker and Officer Frank “Ponch” Poncherello, starred Larry Wilcox and Erik Estrada and was a huge hit back in the day. The reboot film is a new take on the two characters who were the most menacing duo on the California Highway Patrol.

The film, which will be released later this year stars Dax Shepard as Baker and Michael Peña as his partner Ponch. And when we say “partner”, we certainly don’t mean it in a homosexual way. Shepard has also directed the movie which stars Vincent D’Onofrio, Adam Brody, Rosa Salazar, Vida Guerra, and Kristen Bell.

Shepard also helped develop the script based on the 70s hit and he says that he has revived the film in a Bad Boys, Lethal Weapon kinda avatar. Sounds like the same old buddy cop action comedy but the trailer suggests otherwise. Despite the old concept and characters, the story seems fresh and as does the humour.

The original show ran for six seasons (139 episodes) from 1977 to 1983. The show has previously been revived as a reunion film back in 1998. Over the decades, Ponch and Jon have remained alive in pop culture and have been referenced in several other television series and films.
