2017 saw Mollywood actors take on the industry’s normalised misogyny

Other Indian women can draw strength from these Mollywood actors and speak up.

The year 2017 turned out to be a monumental year for women speaking out against harassment at the workplace. Highlighted a couple of ago, especially since the series of allegations against Harvey Weinstein was in the spotlight, the cases have only grown with others like actor Kevin Spacey and comedian Louis CK’s inappropriate behaviour being unmasked.

Closer home, the Malayalam actresses openly took on the bullies in Mollywood. A leading Malayalam actor strongly spoke out against superstar Dileep for allegedly abetting her abduction and molestation. The actor was arrested along with his accomplices, shaking the foundation of Mollywood’s top brass. Actor Amala Paul was also targetted by film editor Lenin for her ‘vulgar comments’ even as he chose to express himself in a more crass language. Parvathy took on Mammootty-starrer Kasaba for its regressive dialogue, and faced online hatred for it. Not before tweeting the most appropriate response to trolls. The way these actors have taken on powerful men of Mollywood is admirable, to say the least.
