As promised, Kulture Didi is back this week with her woke take on another Bollywood masala film. She says it will really help bring about the real achhe din (good days) in our country if we discuss movies intelligently. That is precisely why Kulture Didi, a woke millennial from the City of Joy, has taken the responsibility to review films even though no one really asked her to.
In the name of Ray, she will be dishing on Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, along with a supporting cast full of on-point performers like Vijay Raaz, Sheeba Chadha, Vijay Maurya, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Vijay Varma, Amruta Subhash, and Kalki Koechlin!
The film follows the journey of Ranveer’s Murad, a budding rapper from Dharavi who will convince you to leave the hall chanting “apna time ayega” on repeat. Though glimpses of the Simmba Ranveer peaks through from time to time, he delivers a pretty impressive performance. But the film isn’t just about Murad, it’s about all those who have been reminded all their lives that they are nobodies to harbour ambitions. It is also Alia’s character, Safeena’s right to dream, demand, and go after of a future where she can financially support her partner a life of comfort while he chases his dreams.
The story is layered with goodness and aptly aided by Jay Oza’s beautiful cinematography and Nitin Baid’s smooth editing, that is as smooth as melting butter gliding over a hot piece of toast.
