#KultureDidiReviews: 'Student Of The Year 2' Is A Sequel Nobody Needed

And yet here we are.

As promised, Kulture Didi is back this week with her take on another Bollywood film. This week she dishes on  Punit Malhotra’s redundant sequel to Student Of The YearStudent Of The Year 2 starring  Tiger Shroff, Tara Sutaria and Ananya Panday.

Karan Johar will say that he only produced the film, not direct it, and – we can’t believe we’re saying this – maybe he would’ve done a better job. Somehow SOTY 2 is more cringeworthy than SOTY, the film that launched the careers of two star kids – Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan – in addition to Sidharth Malhotra’s. But apart from being big budget launch engines there is nothing more to the films.

Most of the film focuses on Tiger Shroff’s Rohan (Ro if you’re feeling particularly affectionate), who spends two and a half hours of the film mostly flexing all his muscles. The film begins and ends with particular focus on his biceps in particular…because whatever takes your eyes off his expressionless face.

All the alleged college students spend the entirety of the film dancing, playing kabaddi, and beating each other up because ‘Sailaru Sailare’ is their life’s anthem apparently. They do everything but study. There isn’t a single scene dedicated to show them study, not even once. SOTY at least tried. Again: can’t believe we’re saying this.

Sutaria might be marginally better than Pandey when it comes to acting skills but that isn’t saying much, given Janhvi Kapoor has more expressions on her face than Pandey. And as long as we’re making arbitrary comparisons, Dhadak might just be a masterpiece compared to SOTY 2, it’s that random.
