Friday saw the release of Malayalam film Godha. Jointly produced by the makers of Ezra — CV Sarathi, AV Anoop and Mukesh R Mehta, the wrestling sports drama features Tovino Thomas in the main lead. Godha marks the Malayalam debut of Punjabi actress Wamiqa Gabbi of the 2015 Telugu hit Bhale Manchi Roju fame. She will be seen in the titular role of a Punjabi wrestler Athithi Singh. Godha also stars Renji Panicker, Aju Varghese, Mammukoya, Maala Parvathi, Sreejith Ravi and Hareesh Perumanna.
The film was in news ever since the release of its trailer. The one-minute and fifty-second trailer, which had released on the auspicious occasion of Vishu/Easter was a runaway hit on social media. The songs, composed by Shaan Rahman turned out to be chartbusters as well. Also, Godha is one of the most promoted Malayalam films of 2017.
And as expected, Godha has opened to a flying start at the Kerala box office. Though the film had to compete with a massive blockbuster in the form of SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali 2, the positive reports have worked in the favour of the film to record good occupancy on its opening day across the cinemas of Kerala. Godha has been praised for Basil’s direction and the performances from its lead cast Tovino Thomas, Renji Panicker and most importantly the female lead of the film, debutant Wamiqa Gabbi, whose performance turned out best Malayalam performance of the year by a female lead after Parvathy in Take Off according to the audience. The film is also winning points for Vishnu Sharma’s cinematography which showcases the beautiful locations of Punjab, something rare to be seen in Malayalam films.
Godha has been released on 130 screens across Kerala and the advance booking trends on Saturday evening/night shows suggest that the film is all set to have a bountiful weekend at the Kerala Box Office.
