HBO’s Big Little Lies was one of 2017’s biggest shows. Backed by Reese Witherspoon and helmed by Jean-Marc Vallée, the show, which features some of the biggest names from film and TV including Nicole Kidman and Shailene Woodley – are all set to welcome Meryl Streep, for its second season.
Streep, currently basking in her annual applause for Steven Spielberg’s The Post, is an interesting choice considering the show already has many strong personalities.
Reports indicate that she will play the role of Mary Louise Wright, mother of the now-deceased (spoiler alert!) Perry Wright (played by Alexander Skarsgard). She arrives with questions of her son’s sudden death and with concern for the well-being of her grandchildren – which could mean a face-off between Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman. Incidentally, David E Kelly (producer of Big Little Lies) had told The Hollywood Reporter in October that Streep and Tom Hanks were his dream casting for the show.

The show became a hit for its impressive cast, getting plenty of nominations for both Nicole Kidman and Skarsgard. Streep, on the other hand, hasn’t starred in a TV series since her Emmy-winning turn in Mike Nichols’ Angels of America all the way back in 2003. And given the popularity of Big Little Lies, one can keep their hopes up for Streep adding yet another nomination in her illustrious career.
In the meantime, Streep has won her 19th nomination for Best Actress where she will be pitted against Frances McDormand’s ferocious performance in Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
Streep’s also a part of JJ Abrams’ The Nix, a series reportedly going to be picked up by Amazon. One can hardly wait for Streep to enter Monterey and shake things up!
