Remember Priyanka Chopra’s ‘refugee-immigrant’ t-shirt? Here’s her side of story

'Desi girl'opens up on the controversy

Priyanka Chopra recently did a photoshoot for a ‘Conde Nast Traveller’ magazine where a particular picture sparked a controversy for flaunting a message. The poster grabbed the eyeballs as her t-shirt preferred the word traveler over a refugee or an immigrant. It received a mixed response from the audience. Some criticized the actress for being insensitive while others condemned such kind of photoshoots.

Although, the magazine spokesperson said that their intention was completely misunderstood as the central idea was to urge the people to stand united no matter what. They said that in today’s global scenario, where people are labeled on different parameters, the main idea was to tell the world to stop building the walls.  The magazine also issued an official statement stating that they wanted the people to take the ‘diversity’ as one of the beautiful concepts. The official statement was given to IANS which stated, “At Conde Nast Traveller, we believe that the opening up of borders and the breaking down of walls can help us discover the world, and open up our minds and hearts. “So, when we had actress Priyanka Chopra wear a T-shirt we created on the cover of our sixth anniversary issue, we had a point to make. And it’s not about privilege. or fashion.”

Priyanka Chopra wore a white top that read, “Refugee, Immigrant, Outsider and Traveller wherein the last word ‘Traveler’ was not cut. Fans criticized the actress heavily for doing such a photoshoot. Their outrage poured on Twitter and other social media platforms. However, our very own ‘Desi girl’ soon took notice of the issue and decided to speak about it. In an interview given to NDTV channel, the actress made her stance clear by saying that she is highly sensitive towards the issue of refugees. Moreover, her intention was to support them and not disgrace anyone. She told NDTV, ” But it got misconstrued, and I’m sorry people saw it like that and they saw it on me.”

The actress also recently spoke on the ban imposed on Pakistani artistes. She said that she is highly patriotic but then singling out the actors is not a solution to the issue. She said that she is okay with whatever the government is deciding but why only actors are being targetted. She told NDTV, “I don’t believe that artistes are a representation of — at least there hasn’t been an actor who has done something which has harmed someone’s life out of malice or anything.”
