I mean this in the nicest way possible, but Ranbir Kapoor is quite possibly a Boggart.
Before you spam me, wait. Let me explain. The team handling makeup and prosthetics for Sanju is undoubtedly outstanding, but makeup can only get you so far, can it not? Sanjay Dutt’s lopsided swagger, his awkward gait, the way he stands like he’s bracing for an unexpected hit, seems to come easy to Ranbir Kapoor. And quite frankly, we expected nothing less from the man who played a Corleone-eque Samar Pratap (Rajneeti) to perfection in the early days of his career.
But to emulate that I-did-something-last-summer look that seem to perpetually haunt Dutt’s eyes is an unexpected bonus none of us expected. Which, as Harry Potter fans would tell you, is exactly what Boggarts do. They capture not just the shape, but also the essence of the person they are emulating.
Rajkumar Hirani’s long anticipated Sanjay Dutt biopic finally dropped its first poster and teaser, prompting quite a few unhinged jaws. The film, underwhelmingly titled Sanju (Baba would have worked so much better, y’all), isn’t your usual run-of-the-mill teaser either. Done narration-style, with Kapoor playing Baba from various stages in his life, the teaser seems to be mocking not just the haters, but Dutt’s crazy life too. Have we seen better teasers than this one? For sure. Is this one still pretty amazing because OMG Ranbir? For sure.
The last few years have been troubled times for the Ranbir Kapoor fan in all of us, haven’t they? Tamasha‘s unlovable Ved made us cringe, while Bombay Velvet‘s Johnny weirded us out; ADHM‘s Ayan was infuriatingly entitled while Jagga Jasoos’ Jagga came, we saw, he bombed. In these dark times, it were the many leaked photos and unverified stories from the sets of Hirani’s Dutt biopic that kept us doing. And sure looks like it was worth the wait.
