Last Friday saw the release of Aamir Khan starrer Dangal. Written and directed by Nitesh Tiwari and jointly produced by Aamir Khan and Siddharth Roy Kapur, the film is based on the true story of former wrestler-turned-coach, Mahavir Singh Phogat.
As expected, Dangal has taken the Chennai Box Office by storm, registering 95% occupancy throughout the opening weekend. The sports-drama had nearly 258 shows across 15 screens, including both Hindi and Tamil version, Yudham. Dangal has managed to cross Rs 1 crore mark in its first three-day weekend to be the number one film of the week at the Chennai Box Office. With this, Dangal has emerged as the second highest non-Tamil film after MS Dhoni-The Untold Story to do so.
It’s also worth mentioning that Dangal is the first non-Tamil film after 7-years to become the No. 1 film of the week at the Chennai Box Office. The previous No. 1 non-Tamil film of the week was occupied by the 2009 Christmas blockbuster 3 Idiots, also starring Aamir Khan. Interestingly, Dangal has overpowered the Tamil Christmas release, Vishal – Tamannaah starrer Kaththi Sandai at the Chennai Box Office. Dangal has also shattered the opening weekend collections of Salman Khan’s Sultan, Shah Rukh Khan’s Fan and Akshay Kumar starrer Housefull 3.

Prior to its release, Dangal gained good publicity in Tamil Nadu when Aamir Khan privately screened the film for Tamil superstar Rajinikanth. The change in the release date of Suriya’s Singam 3, too worked for the Aamir Khan starrer to gain the maximum number of screens at the Kollywood Box Office.
