Game of Thrones writer George R. R. Martin may not ever be able to finish up with Winds of Winter but, he did do some good to the fans recently. Remember that spin-off series that we have all been hearing GoT fans raving about? GRRM has taken it upon himself to clarify all the doubts and theories floating around that fans might hold about the future projects.
The first thing that Martin mentioned in his blog post, was that this upcoming series will not be a “spin-off” but the term prequel seems to fit what he describes. “What we’re talking about are new stories set in the ‘secondary universe’ (to borrow Tolkien’s term) of Westeros and the world beyond, the world I created for A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE,” Martin wrote. He added, “Some may not even be set on Westeros. Rather than ‘spinoff’ or ‘prequel,’ however, I prefer the term ‘successor show.’ That’s what I’ve been calling them.”
Secondly, there will not be just one series. No, it’s not four either but, there will be a total of five prequel series! While discussing the possibility of the shows in a meeting with HBO back in August last year, Martin had planned two prequel series. However, as more writers got involved, the concepts evolved into four different series, each to be written by Max Borenstein, Jane Goldman, Brian Helgeland, and Carly Wray. According to GRRM, whenever he and the other four writers “weren’t drinking margaritas and eating chile rellenos and visiting Meow Wolf,” they are going back and forth discussing the possibilities of new storylines in the realm.
If you’re wondering that that only makes it four prequels then, here’s the catch. There’s one more secret writer whose name will be revealed when they are officially on board. But, before you get all happy about it, you must remember that these are at the very beginning stages of development and whether or not they will be made into shows remains to be seen.
One thing is for clear though, none of the prequels will be about Robert’s Rebellion. And, from the looks of it, Martin is not interested in carrying forth a story with characters we already know. So, we’re guessing it could be about the origins of the White Walkers or Aegon’s Conquest of Westeros.
