Not just “butter rape scene”, Hollywood has a history of depicting rapes in a brutal way

Here are a few films where filmmakers recreated the horrors of sexual assault with some so disturbing, they will make you cringe.

Certain filmmakers desperately seek to bring originality into their films let it be about love, murder or sex. There’s a need for such makers to create a film that is believable and leaves a lasting impact on the audience. Over time, many films have managed to come as close to reality as possible and some have even transcended it. So, when it comes to rape, they don’t shy away from the challenge. Here are a few films where filmmakers recreated the horrors of sexual assault with some so disturbing, they will make you cringe.

Crash (1996)

Sometimes the craziest ideas are just right there in front of us, aren’t they? The film is about a nutty group who get off on car crashes. In one of the grossest scenes, after Jame Spader and Rosanna Arquette’s characters meet with a car accident, Arquette is left with a deep gash on her thigh. Spader then uses this wound and penetrates it like a vagina.

A Serbian Film (2010)

Perhaps the most violent and gruesome film here, A Serbian film encircles the life of a male porn star who stars in an “art film” to revive his career. Sooner, he realises that the “art film” involves child abuse, murder, rape, necrophilia, sodomy, etc., all of which he gets manipulated into. There’s this one scene where a woman gives birth to a baby which then gets raped by a man.

I Spit on Your Grave 2 (2013)

A sort of a sequel to the 1978 rape and revenge film, this film features brutal rape of an aspiring model. After getting raped, Katie is abducted and then gang raped multiple times and at one point, she even gets her vagina electrocuted which leaves her bleeding profusely. Later, she gains revenge on her rapists by killing them all one by one.

Evil Dead (2013)

The character of Jane Levy gets to experience the horror of a lifetime in this film. She gets attacked by a demon who entangles her in tree branches. Soon after, one branch starts to climb up her leg and then crawls inside her to possess her. I have seen many ways to possess a human body; none this disturbing.

Deliverance (1972)

A group of men encounter bad luck in a forest as they get jumped by a group of hippies. They grab hold of one of the men (played by Ned Beatty) and then rape him. The rapists even ask him to squeal like a pig. The film was extremely criticised for featuring same-sex rape.

Camp Dread (2014)

Camp Dread revolves around a horror movie director with a failed career. He hopes to revive his career through funds raised by a reality show. As part of the show, two contestants, a man and woman shoot a sex scene which quickly turns ugly. After the man fails to get an erection, he starts raping his co-contestant only to finish by ejaculating on her belly.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)

Lisbeth Salander, a ward of the state, gets a new guardian after the previous one dies of a stroke. Her new guardian sexually harasses her, and ultimately, rapes her anally after tying her to a bed. He continually rapes the girl until she records proof of the crime and reports him.

Irreversible (2002)

Ironically, the film runs in reverse. There’s a murder in the beginning of the film of a man who is then revealed to have raped a woman who dated one of the murderers. The woman, played by Monica Belucci, witnessed Le Tenia beat a transsexual. After becoming aware of her presence, Le Tenia runs her down and then anally rapes her. Following the brutal rape, he kicks her until she passes out.

Straw Dogs (1971)

This film features the rape of Susan George’s character of Amy who gets gang raped by a bunch of village yokels right after she lay with another man, played by Del Henney.

Last Tango in Paris (1972)

Starring Marlon Brando and Maria Schneider, the film has been the centre of controversy with one specific scene where Brando’s character penetrates Schneider with a slab of butter. Recently, this scene centred fresh controversy after director Bertolucci revealed that the scene hadn’t been consented to by the actress and was in fact forced.
