The season of sequels, prequels, reboots and remakes has lasted longer in Bollywood now, than the Long Night could in Game of Thrones. We never really wanted the Judwaa 2 and Coolie No.1 remakes that we keep getting. And our woes don’t seem to be ending anytime soon.
The Vidya Balan and Akshay Kumar-starrer Bhool Bhulaiyaa is about to get a sequel, if reports are to be believed. The 2007 psychological thriller was not only a well-made remake of the 1993 Malayalam film Manichitrathazhu, it is also the funniest film Kumar has been in after and since Hera Pheri.
But of course, there’s a catch.
Priyadarshan, who directed the 2007 film will not be returning for the sequel neither will the original cast. Instead Farhad Samji – who has directed films like Housefull 3 and 4, is about to direct the Coolie No 1 remake, and written ones like Chennai Express and Judwaa 2 – is going to be writing and directing the sequel. Yikes!
Bhushan Kumar, Chairman and Managing Director of T-Series, who produced the Vidya Balan starrer has greenlit the sequel. According to a Mumbai Mirror report, a source revealed, “Bhushan wanted to make a part 2 of Bhool Bhulaiyaa for a while now and has cracked an idea with Farhad Samji, who will be writing and directing the film. It is in the development stage and will feature a fresh cast. Once the final script is locked, the team will kick off casting and other pre-production formalities.”
It’s not like we are entirely opposed to the idea of Bhool Bhulaiyaa getting a sequel. But there could’ve been a better way perhaps.
