Netflix India is on a roll and we truly hope it doesn’t stop anytime soon. After Sacred Games’ stupendous success, it is Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment that’s producing a show for the streaming giant. Based on Bilal Siddiqi’s novel The Bard of Blood, the show will star Shanghai actor Emraan Hashmi.
Netflix has dropped a 30-second announcement video and it’s pretty lit. No, the teaser doesn’t have much by way of action, but in a world where Naagin 3 and Kavach exist, we’re allowed a bit of over-excitement at the prospect of a hopefully decent show.
Talking about what to expect from The Bard of Blood, Shah Rukh said in a statement, “We have always tried to create world class content and entertainment from India. Netflix has shown that Indian stories have a global audience and we would love to use this platform and its reach to tell more stories.”
Siddiqi’s novel, which released in 2015, is a crime thriller with a RAW agent in its midst. The former spy, Kabir Anand, who is leading a peaceful life as an English professor (hence the Shakespeare reference), when the murder of his former boss pulls him back into his old life.
The show will reportedly have “intricate, highly stylised action sequences never before seen on screen in India.”
Talking about the show, Netflix founder and CEO Reed Hastings said, “We are thrilled to work with a brilliant, young writer like Bilal Siddiqi and take his gripping, inventive storytelling to Netflix members worldwide.”
The show will be multilingual and will be shot in English, Hindi and Urdu among other languages.
Netflix has an exciting line-up of originals for its Indian viewers in the next few months. Radhika Apte and Manav Kaul’s Ghoul releases on August 24, while Leila, Again, Crocodile, and Selection Day are all in the pipeline.
