The third spin-off film on Marvel fans’ favourite mutant Wolverine shows him as a beaten-down westerner still fighting to save the last of his kind. Logan has been directed by James Mangold and for the last time, Hugh Jackman will feature as the three-clawed beast. Aging for a change, Wolverine will pose as a one-man-army in this 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise film. The trailer sets the theme for the movie which will be different from the previous ones; dustier, western and reminiscent of the game The Last of Us.
In the trailer, we see Logan standing in a cemetery, with his voiceover saying, “Charles, the world isn’t the same as it was. Mutants — they’re gone now.” Set in 2024, the film is going to be another boring ‘all-other-mutants-are-dead’ film. Logan will take a detour into Wolverine’s grim, sullen life and overall seems like a lazy attempt by Marvel to do away with Jackman’s last mission as a mutant.
Marvel yet again pushes a detached, unfeeling Logan to care for another. This time, it’s a little girl named Laura Kinney who, in Charles’ own words, is similar to him. “She’s like you. Very much like you,” says an aged Charles as he nears his demise.
Laura Kinney is the female clone of Wolverine X-23. Being a mutant, the girl is targeted by the lesser-evolved humans. Logan takes her under his protection, not that she would need it. Possessing powers similar to Logan’s, this little girl has animalistic superstrength, regenerative healing and two claws as opposed to Wolverine’s three.
The trailer concludes with a bloodied Logan holding a shovel with Charles’ voiceover, telling him that he still has time. The scene has been speculated to be hinting at Charles’ death.
The film is produced by Simon Kinberg and will hit theatres on March 3, 2017.
