Amid the growing demand for abolishing the practice of giving divorce by triple talaq, a 16-year-old girl from rural Bengal gave her husband ‘talaq’ by uttering the word thrice as he was not letting her study and was against her decision to continue her studies. She has got support from many people for her courageous act, however, they are some who are not very pleased with it.

Mampi said, “I have to get on with life and carve my path just like Malala did. We have to each fight our own battle. One of her neighbours Asma Bibi said, “Personally, I think it was very courageous of her to act the way she did”.

In 2015, Mampi’s father, Sarjul Gharami, who owns a tea stall, fixed her daughter’s marriage after receiving a proposal from boy’s family. At that time, Mampi who was studying in class IX, made her husband and in-laws agree on her wish to continue further. But things changed after some time, her in-laws objected to her going to school. She managed to study and passed her Madhyamik exam while simultaneously doing household work.

After clearing the exam, she told her husband about her wish to take admission in class XI, but he did not agree to it. A few days ago, she visited her parent’s house and told them she wants to study and enrolled herself in a school. On seeing her desire to get back to school, the headmaster even waived her tuition fees.

When the news of Mampi’s joining the school reached to her in-laws they came to her parent’s house and created a ruckus. They asked Mampi to pack her bag and go back with her, unable to take more, Mampi walked up to her husband and uttered talaq thrice.

Mampi said, “My in-laws were stunned. They left after that, but my parents stood by me”. Her mother said,  “We made a mistake by marrying her off against her wish. She can stay here and study as long as she wants”.
