The Uttar Pradesh government has refused to give a permission to try Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in connection with the 2007 Gorakhpur riots case. The Uttar Pradesh Principal Secretary has also refused permission to prosecute the other suspects in the 2007 Gorakhpur riots. The Uttar Pradesh government’s decision was conveyed to the Allahabad High Court by the state Advocate General on Thursday.
As per a CNN News18 report, the Allahabad High Court has expressed displeasure over the UP government’s move. The High Court had earlier hit out at the Uttar Pradesh government for a delay in giving permission to prosecute the Chief Minister. The then local MP and current Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is one of the accused in the Gorakhpur riots that took place in 2007.

Giving summons to the Uttar Pradesh chief secretary, the High Court had asked him to come with the records of the 2007 Gorakhpur communal riots case
The Allahabad High Court has given a 10-day deadline to the Uttar Pradesh government to file a new application. Asad Hayat, a petitioner in the case reportedly said that they will raise the issue in detail. He also added that he should resign as the Chief Minister.
Reacting to the Uttar Pradesh government’s move, SP spokesperson Ghanshyam Tiwari said that he does not expect Yogi Adityanath to act with fairness. “Right from Godhra to every other riot, there has been a cover up. We do not expect him to act with justice, Ghanshyam Tiwari said while speaking to CNN News18.
A fight had taken place between Hindus and Muslims in January 2007 during a Muharram procession in which a young Hindu, Raj Kumar Agrahari had been hospitalised in Gorakhpur.
