While travelling on the Diamond Harbour Local train in Mumbai, a 26-year-old housewife was allegedly attacked with acid on February 12. The incident took place around 10:30 pm in the night between Baruipur and Kalyanpur stations.
The main accused Swarup Haldar is under the police radar and lives near to the victim’s residence in the Kalyanpur area of Baruipur. He threw the acid in wake of an old dispute with the victim’s father who allegedly built a service road encroaching a part of Swarup’s property.
Victim’s father has accused Swarup of throwing acid on his daughter who is married and lives at her parental residence. The father said,”Swaroop had also warned my son earlier to withdraw a court case filed against him with Baruipur police or his sister might face an acid attack. He had also hurled bombs at my house.”
The police have started the investigation and are set to arrest the accused. DSP of GRP, Mohd Ansur Juwa said, “We have detained the accused on the complaint of the victim’s father. We are questioning him and will arrest him.”
In another incident of the acid attack on a local train, a school girl, who also worked in a beauty parlour, from 24 Parganas district in West Bengal was attacked with acid in Diamond Harbour’s Usti area while she was returning from tuitions. She boarded the local train from Jadhavpur around 10 pm in the night on February 12. As soon as the train left the station, a man sitting on the train at some corner got up and hurled acid on her face. She suffered severe burns on her cheeks and neck while another woman sitting beside her was also injured.
The acid attacker jumped off the running train and fled away while the other passengers took the victims to MR Bangur Hospital and informed local GRP officers.
This was the second acid attack in South 24 Parganas in less than a week and the third since November. Earlier in November 2016, a girl studying in class 10th was attacked by some unknown goon.
