When Indians across the globe were celebrating Manushi Chhillar being crowned as Miss World 2017, a tweet storm regarding her name was brewing and drawing ire of social media users. Congress leader Shashi Tharoor took a jibe at her name to much anger of Twitterati who were not impressed by his casual remarks. He tried to make a pun on her surname, Chhillar, equating it to the Hindi slang for ‘coinage’.
What a mistake to demonetise our currency! BJP should have realised that Indian cash dominates the globe: look, even our Chhillar has become Miss World!

In the latest development on the matter, the National Commission of Women (NCW) would summon Tharoor for his ‘derogatory and degrading’ remark against the newly-crowned Miss World 2017.
Commenting on Tharoor’s remark on Manushi, NCW tweeted their condemnation. In a series of tweets, NCW said,
@NCWIndia will summon @ShashiTharoor to commission on his derogatory and degrading tweet on our pride @ManushiChhillar She got fame and name to country by winning #MissWorld crown

NCW condemn the tweet of @INCIndia leader @ShashiTharoor. He degraded the achievement of daughter of #haryana and #India who got glory to the country. Will he call his own daughter chillar? He must apologize immediately. https://t.co/WD6q49vUo8

Tharoor’s seemingly witty tweet on Manushi Chhillar backfired when the Twitteratis slammed him for comparing her surname to ‘chillar’ (loose change). He had tweeted,
You said this!!! Unbelievable! Sir, how can anyone at ur stature possibly think like this, leave aside making a tweet.

Person who always talks logically and on the facts at international stage is talking illogical in India. Ideally there is no comparison between Chhillar and demonitization

Afterwards, Tharoor shifted to damage control mode by issuing an apology. He tweeted,
Guess the pun IS the lowest form of humour, & the bilingual pun lower still! Apologies to the many who seem to have been righteously offended by a light-hearted tweet today. Certainly no offence was meant to a bright young girl whose answer i’ve separately praised. Please: Chill!

Haryana Women and Child Development Minister Kavita Jain also slammed Tharoor and called his tweet an “indulging in callous and reckless ‘wordplay’ on Miss World Manushi Chhillar”.
