Thanks to Uttar Pradesh government’s penchant for renaming things that don’t need to be renamed, the world’s been gifted a meme whose brilliance we do not deserve. After Mughal Sarai railway station was renamed to Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya junction in August 2018, Yogi Adityanath’s government announced that Allahabad was to be renamed Prayag Raj.
The fallout of this name change announcement is #AajSeTumharaNaam, the meme trend we deserve.
Allahabad, was named Illahabad, meaning ‘abode of God’ in 1575 by Emperor Akbar. The multiple name changes that have followed the tenure of the BJP government in India, debate has been rife that the ruling party intends to do away with reminders of the Mughal era.
