In a rare gesture, a police officer has offered to become the guardian of a prisoner’s daughter who allegedly lost his life in the police custody.
Sujata Patil, a woman deputy superintendent of police, has sought the guardianship of the three-year-old daughter of a prisoner who allegedly died in police custody. Aniket Kothale, the girls’ father, allegedly died in the custody of the Sangli police around a month ago.
Posted in Hingoli district, Sujata requested Vishwas Nangre-Patil, special inspector general of police in Kolhapur range and wrote a letter seeking permission to take the guardianship of the girl.

While talking to a leading English daily, Sujata, already a mother of three, said,
Neither can I get a son for Kothale’s mother nor a husband for his young widow. But there is definitely something I can do for his small daughter, who does not even understand what has happened. We will take care of her education and all future needs.
For this humanitarian gesture, Sujata has even got support from her family. Her husband, an RTO inspector, and their daughter Samartha (18) were supportive of the idea.
She further added,
I will soon complete the legal process and she will be my fourth child.
It is to be noted that Kothale’s death in policy custody had drawn criticism and hampered the image of the police in the state.

They have been booked under sections 302 (murder), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence or giving false information), 303 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.
Meanwhile, Hingoli superintendent of police Arvind Chawria has praised Sujata’s move. He said,
She has made us proud. This will not only set an example before society but also go a long way in helping the police shore up its image.
