After Kolkata, Mathura would be only the second city in India to get tram transport. The blueprint for all-round development of Lord Krishna’s land Mathura and Vrindavan also gives rise to the prospect of a large network of roads in and around the pilgrimage centre.
According to a Times of India report, state minister for energy and Mathura MLA Shrikant Sharma has said that the tram transport in the holy city would be operational by 2018. The report suggests that the decision was taken in presence of chief minister Yogi Adityanath and Mathura MP Hema Malini.
It was decided to put in place a new traffic management system to ease congestion in and around the ‘parikrama’ area.
It is for this reason that the 21-kosi parikarama marg will have a tram transport adjacent to Parikrama Marg, Sharma said.

He said the tram route would also have a normal road route on which four-wheelers and other vehicles could ply as well. The idea is to ensure proper facilities to devotees.
The tram project will reportedly cost Rs 899 crore, in which a ring road around the 84-kosi parikrama marg would also come up as part of the upgradation of the facility in Mathura-Vrindavan.
All roads adjacent to parikrama margs in Mathura would be linked while the ring road would be linked to Agra-Jaipur and Lucknow-Agra highways. The project would be completed through Centre-state partnership.
A kacchha parikrama marg would also come up in Mathura and Vrindavan for benefit of devotees who prefer to perform the parikrama crawling or lying prostrate. The deadline to upgrade the Mathura project would be 360 days.
