Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh on Wednesday resigned from his Amritsar Lok Sabha seat in protest against the Supreme Court judgement holding the 2004 law passed by Punjab to terminate the Sutlej Yamuna Link (SYL) canal water sharing agreement with neighbouring states as unconstitutional. All the Congress MLAs too resigned from the Punjab Assembly as well.
“Have resigned from the Lok Sabha in protest of the SC verdict on SYL. The entire CLP stands with me as we continue our fight for Punjab,” Singh tweeted after tendering his resignation.

After tendering his resignation, Amarinder hit out at the Badals, accusing the ruling family of having made a mess of the state, TV reports said.

“The decision came late, but in the favour of Haryana. I welcome it,” Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar told reporters. A five-judge bench headed by Justice Anil R Dave answered in negative all the questions posed to the apex court by the Presidential reference on the SYL issue.
During Amarinder Singh’s tenure as chief minister of Punjab, the state Assembly had unanimously passed a resolution terminating water sharing agreements with Haryana, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Chandigarh and Delhi on Sutlej and Yamuna waters. The Centre will now take over the canal and continue building it.
