Amitabh Bachchan explains how GST would help India. Watch this video

The Central government on Monday released a video where actor Amitabh Bachchan is speaking about the much talked about Goods and Services Tax (GST)

Among a series of efforts to educate people on the Goods and Services Tax (GST), the Central government on Monday launched a video where actor Amitabh Bachchan is speaking about the much talked about tax. “GST is not just a tax, it is an initiative to unite the Indian market,” the actor is seen speaking in the video. The video has been made by the Central Board of Excise and Customs of the Government of India.

The government is leaving no stone unturned to educate people about the tax. From Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu to MoS MSME Giriraj Singh, most of the leaders of the Narendra Modi government have been tweeting the video.

The Goods and Services Tax, which aims at making India one unified common market, will come into effect from July 1. Reviewing the preparations for the rollout of the GST regime from 1 July, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had recently assured that it will be “a turning point” in the economy of the country. The government is hoping that GST will be simpler and easier to administer than all other indirect taxes of the Centre and State levied so far.

What is GST?

GST is a single tax on the supply of goods and services, from the manufacturer to the consumer. Taxes paid at each stage will be available in the next stage of value addition, thus with the implementation of the GST, a tax will only be paid at value addition at each stage. This would mean that the final consumer has to bear only the amount of GST charged by the last dealer in the supply chain.
