Anu Kumari from Haryana’s Sonepat region was just like any other woman in her hometown. But once the UPSC 2017 results were declared, she became a celebrity in her locality after ranking second in the civil services exam. On Saturday, she was appointed as the brand ambassador of the ‘Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao’ (BBBP) programme of her district.
Kumari, after a ten-year-stint in the corporate sector, cleared the country’s most prestigious IAS exams. After pursuing BSc (Hons) in Physics from Delhi University and an MBA (Finance and Marketing) from IMT, Nagpur, she cracked exam in her second attempt.

A mother of a four-year-old son, Kumari always dreamt of serving the nation and its people.
“I worked in the corporate sector for nine years but somehow the sense of contentment was always lacking. I kept feeling as if there was no meaning to life. Finally, after much persuasion from my family, I decided to take the plunge in 2016,” she told The Hindu.
Among the five UPSC top rank holders of the year 2017, three belong to Haryana.
Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar, while congratulating Kumari, said that she is an inspiration to all the daughters who work hard to prove their capabilities. Haryana urban local bodies minister Kavita Jain, who declared Kumari as the BBBP ambassador in Haryana, said, “There is need to give them an opportunity to prove their mettle. It is a matter of pride not only for Sonipat (sic) but for entire Haryana that daughter from an ordinary family has proved her mettle in the civil services exam.”
The UPSC results were declared on Friday. Out of the 990 selected candidates, 476 are from the General category, 275 OBC, 165 from the Scheduled Castes and 74 from the Scheduled Tribes, reports The Indian Express.
