At the Poruvazhy Peruviruthy Malanada Temple dedicated to Duryodhana in Kerala’s Kollam district, a devotee ‘offering’ was 101 bottles of rum. Malanada is the only temple in South India that is dedicated to Duryodhana, the Kaurava king who
was the antithesis of the Pandavas in Mahabharata. Legend has it that Duryodhana rested here while looking for the exiled Pandavas. He was offered toddy (palm wine) by a family when he asked for water. Since then, it has become a tradition among the devotees. Unlike other Hindu temples in the country, Malanada temple doesn’t follow Brahmanical traditions and the rituals are conducted by the Kuravas.
