‘Be a human and say NOT IN MY NAME’, Twitter unites to join campaign against lynchings

The not in my name movement was initiated through a Facebook post by a filmmaker against the killing of 16-year-old Junaid

Thousands of Indians have pledged to gather at an event to speak up against the recent incidents of lynchings of Muslims. The movement was initiated through a Facebook post by a filmmaker against the killing of 16-year-old Junaid. Nearly 6,000 people have given their consent on their Facebook page to join the protest.

Apart from Jantar Mantar in Delhi where the protest will be held between 6pm to 8pm, marches will be held in at least 4 other cities including Kolkata, Hyderabad, Thiruvananthapuram, and Bengaluru. Organised by Saba Dewan and Sanjay Kak and Rahul Roy, the Facebook page says: “Not In My Name is a citizens protest against the recent spate of targeted lynchings of Muslims in India – the most recent of 16 year old Junaid, stabbed to death on a suburban train on 23 June 2017 in Delhi (NCR).”

Appealing people to come out and speak against the attacks, the Facebook page says: “As citizens let’s get together and through music and poetry assert that the killings and the hatred being unleashed – Is Not In Our Name. If not now then when? Right to Life and Equality is a fundamental right enshrined in the Constitution of India. It is time we the citizens of India reclaim and protect our Constitution.”

The movement has also stated how these attacks on Muslims have a pattern and how the government has not said anything against these incidents.

People have been asked to carry banners with the slogan – NOT IN MY NAME to the protest site. However, the group categorically states that people should not join the protest with party or organisational banners. Facebook users have been given an option to change their profile pictures with a “NOT IN MY NAME” tag.

Here is how the movement is gathering momentum on all social media channels including Facebook and Twitter:
