Bhubaneswar fire update: Hospital booked, owner absconding

Three employees of the hospital have also been suspended for negligence.

The police on Tuesday lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against the SUM Hospital in Bhubaneswar after fire broke out on Monday evening, killing 22 people. The hospital’s owner Manoj Naik facing arrest, has gone underground, sources told News18. Meanwhile, three employees of the hospital have been suspended for negligence, ANI reported.

At least 22 people were killed when fire broke out in the dialysis ward situated on the first floor of Bhubaneswar’s SUM Hospital. Soon, the blaze spread rapidly to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) ward.

Meanwhile, the hospital on Tuesday denied there was any negligent on the management’s part and the exact reason would be known after investigation.

“Tomorrow an accident took place and like we are assuming, it might be short-circuit. When the smoke started emerging, we shifted the patient to different wards and to nearby hospitals. There is no need to worry. We cannot say anything right now,” Dr Lingraj, the hospital’s patient relations officer, told ANI.
