Two cases have been registered against BJP MP Raghav Lakhanpal Sharma and several others for their alleged involvement in a violent clash between two communities on April 20 in UP’s Saharnpur.
The first FIR was filed against over 300 people including the 42-year-old lawmaker in connection with stone pelting by members of two communities on Thursday during a rally to mark Ambedkar Jayanti at Sadak Dudhali village. Meanwhile, efforts are on to identify the rioters.
The second FIR was lodged in connection with the protest outside the SSP’s house in which a CCTV camera was damaged and his “nameplate removed”, the police said. The Shaharanpur MP also marched to the Saharanpur police chief Love Kumar’s official residence to protest.
The clash happened after supporters of the lawmaker reportedly insisted on taking out a procession to mark Ambedkar Jayanti this year that has been banned for years to maintain peace in the area. They have been charged with violence, vandalism and attack on the house the Senior Superintendent of Police and the DM office.
“Due action would be followed. Law would take its own course. We have to take all steps necessary to maintain law and order,” Mr Kumar told NDTV. He also said that his family members were present at his residence when Lakhanpal arrived along with supporters.
The Indian Police Service Association that was celebrating the Civil Services Day on April 21 called the attack at MR Kumar’s house unfortunate.
“It demoralises the officer, traumatises family.Hope government upholds morale of police,” the IPS Association tweeted.
