Normal life has been hit hard after heavy rains lashed Mumbai on Tuesday evening, with train and flight operations being severely affected. According to the Indian Meteorological Department, heavy rainfall is expected in the next 24 hours across the city and adjoining areas. According to reports, a high tide of 4.45 metres is expected to occur at around 12 pm. The schools have been shut for safety reasons, state Education Minister Vinod Tawde tweeted.
The incessant rains have affected the city for the second time in the last one month. In fact, the dabbawallas have also decided not to deliver food due to the waterlogged streets.
“We won’t be working today. There will be no Dabba deliveries by Mumbai Dabbawalas due to rains” said Subhash Talekar, Mumbai Dabbawala Association spokesperson. The dabbawallas are known for their efficient time management in delivering food from home to the office. But the heavy rainfalls have affected their business.
According to reports, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminal International Airport has been shut with both the runways being non-operational. A total of 56 flights have been diverted so far. On Tuesday evening, a Spicejet plane overshot a wet runway, but all the passengers were safe. As far as train operations are concerned, 5 Western Railways trains were cancelled. 6 trains belonging to the Central Railways also got cancelled and two were diverted.
