In a trend that is currently growing in Hadauti region of Rajasthan, youth who are finding to find a bride for themselves are reportedly buying brides at Rs 50,000 to 1 lakh. According to a Times of India report, this is a common practice in areas including Kota, Bundi, Jhalawar, and Baran. Communities like Maheshwari, Baniya, Jain, and Brahmin also opt for such marriages. A tout told the daily that the bride is available for Rs 50,000 to 1 lakh and there was unlawful or illegal once the both the parties are ready to choose this kind of marriage.

The daily reported that these brides are bought from states like Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Bihar. Citing an incident from a region in the state, the daily reported that a 42-year-old man belonging to the Baniya community could not find an ideal bride within his community and hence, went on to purchase bride from Jharkhand. The couple is now apparently living a happy married life with their 1-year-old child.
“I wanted a family of my own and when I could not get a bride in my community, I purchased one for Rs 1 lakh,” Times of India quoted Namichand as saying.
However, some instances of theft have also been reported in the area. The report suggested that a family was conned after a bride fled with money and other valuables. The bride who was bought for Rs 1.25 lakh fled with jewellery just three months after the marriage took place.
