After India’s entry into prestigious Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR), that has removed impediment vis-a-vis New Delhi’s collaboration with Moscow on a joint project, the country is planning to test a new version of Barhmos cruise missile aiming to increase its reach b y 150 km, over its current range of 300 km.
An extended range of version of the missile with an aim to reach 450 km , a shade above its current MTCR capped range of 300 km, is expected to be tested around Mrach 10, DRDO chief S. Chridtopher said.
“The range of 450 km was possible even earlier but we were under MTCR restrictions. We are also working on a Brahmos version 2 that can go to 800-850 km. These are the two initial benefits of the MTCR,” The Economic Times quoted DRDO chief as saying.
Work has also started on a new version of the Akash anti air missile and talks are on for a possible export order from Vietnam, he added. Currently, BrahMos is capable of hitting targets beyond the radar horizon and can be launched from from submarines, ships, aircraft or land.
It has been earlier reported that India and Russia have mutually agreed to extend the range of jointly developed missile giving it an ability to strike .
Notedly, Brahmos current range i.e. 300 km makes it difficult to hit targets in Pakistan.
Brahmos is capable of striking down terror camps or hideouts even in hilly areas, where natural protection makes any other offensive action, except crossing the border, very difficult.
