Tension rose in Bulandshahr district of Uttar Pradesh after a group of excited men, celebrating Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) landslide victory in the state, allegedly tried to hoist the party flag on the roof of a mosque on Wednesday night.
According to reports, the situation is still tense and the Police and Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) have been deployed in the area to monitor and control the situation.
The incident took place at Chachrai village situated in Jehangirabad block of Bulandshahr. The village has a population of 2,000 with Hindus and Muslims in equal number.
It was during the night when a procession of the saffron party’s supporters, with tilaks on their foreheads, passed through the area beating on drums and celebrating the big win. A few of them stood in front of the gate of the mosque and then began hoisting the flag on the roof of the mosque. People present there opposed this act, which led to an altercation.
Though timely police intervention prevented the situation from worsening, there is now a palpable fear in the village. The police reached the spot immediately, following which, the men fled from the spot but not before warning the people that they would come armed with swords the next time.
After receiving the complaint, senior officials have deployed cops around the mosque so that no one is able to disturb the peace in the region. The investigation into this matter is on.
BJP has reportedly denied their involvement in the incident. It has said that this is the handiwork of anti-social elements and that the party has nothing to do with this matter.
