While a number of students across the country are making efforts to get admission in various colleges of Delhi University, DU’s Ramjas College is reportedly all set to hike the fee for the academic session. The college principal has reportedly asserted that the hike is for the purpose of maintenance of the new building.
According to a report in Indian Express, some of the staff council members have claimed that fees were being increased because the students’ fund had been used up during the hundredth anniversary of the college last year. The reports suggested that the hike is of Rs 2,500 for social science courses and Rs 3,000- Rs 4,000 for science courses.
“The bursar said in the meeting that funds were utilised. It was communicated verbally. We said this (fee hike) should be the last resort and should ideally not be done as none of the committee convenors had put forward any recommendation for such an increase,” said Tanvir Aeijaz who teaches in Ramjas College told the daily.
However, the officiating principal of the college refuted allegations of the trying to increase the students’ fund by increasing the fee and said that even if there is a fee hike, Ramjas College fees is lesser than other Delhi University college including St Stephen’s, Shri Ram College of Commerce.
“Our fees is not even one-third of that of SRCC. We increased the fees as there is a need for a fund for maintenance of the new building fit in air-conditioners and also paying the safai karmachari,” Indian Express quoted the P C Tulsiyan, the officiating principal of the college as saying.
The move has not gone down well with a number of people as National Student Union of India (NSUI) have staged a protest against the huge hike. NSUI has demanded a rollback of the fee hike.
