CJI reads out verses from Quran during Supreme Court hearing, asks ‘where does it talk of triple talaq’

As Supreme Court is hearing the matter of the constitutional validity of triple talaq, Chief Justice of India JS Khehar read out verses from the Quran and questioned where is there a mention of the practice in the Holy book.

So as to tell that there is no provision of triple talaq in Quran, CJI JS Khehar, read out verses from Surah At-Talaq to a counsel of the respondents. In his reply to senior advocate V Giri, the CJI said it is only the first two forms — Ehsan and Ahsan — that are based on the holy book.

According to a report in News 18.com, CJI JS Khehar said, “To get complete information, one has to read all the paragraphs before and after. Even Mr (Kapil) Sibal cited only a select few. If you say the period iddah is compulsory after every pronouncement and it is the third instance after which it becomes irrevocable… hence, Talaq-e-Biddat finds no place in the Quran. We are only pointing this out to you because you should know that we also understand what is happening here and it’s not that we are not getting it”.

The hearing of the constitutional validity of triple talaq is underway in the Supreme Court since May 11. The order on the issue is expected to come out in the month of June. Earlier, in the day the bench of judges asked Muslim Law Bords if there’s a provision by which a woman can exclude triple talaq as a clause in the marriage contract- nikahnama.
