A major accident was averted at the Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International airport on Friday after an Air India plane was forced to abort take off as another plane was landing on the same highway. Air India’s AI 156 with over 120 on board, speeding for the take off for Goa had to reject its take off at about 11.30 am.
Since parallel operations are not allowed on runways due to safety reasons, on seeing the incoming plane on the same runway, the air traffic control (ATC) asked the commander of AI flight, Captain Amit Tyagi, to reject take off. Parallel operations are denied as if the incoming plane has to reject landing due to an emergency and needs to take off again, there are chances of a collision.
IndiGo’s Ranchi-Delhi 6E398 landed on the same runway soon after. IndiGo denied commenting on the issue. As per reports, the pilot had cited “unstable approach” as the reason for going around.
After having been halted, the Air India aircraft finally took off for Goa at 12.50 pm.
However, the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) denied any lapse in security. “The aircraft was asked to reject take off as per normal protocol. There was no issue of collision or infringement. The safety was nowhere compromised,” the DGCA said.
The Air India engineering also expressed shock how despite the high speed reject such a warm weather, the plane’s tyres did not burst.
Delhi’s IGI airport is India’s busiest airport where close to 1,200 flights operate on a daily basis.
