Congress leader and former Union Minister Akhilesh Das Gupta dies of heart attack

He served as a mayor of Lucknow and was the Minister of State for Steel in UPA-I

Congress leader and former Union Minister Akhilesh Das Gupta breathed his last on Wednesday after suffering a heart attack. He served as a mayor of Lucknow and was the Minister of State for Steel in UPA-I. He was the son of former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Babu Banarasi Das.

Akhilesh Das Gupta was a Rajya Sabha MP for 18 years, he left Congress and joined Bahujan Samaj Party. Once close to BSP supremo Mayawati, Akhileh Das Gupta held the post of party’s general secretary. However, he left the party after not getting Rajya Sabha ticket in 2014 after which he also made allegation on BSP supremo for asking money to give party tickets. Later, he rejoined Congress.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to express condolences, he wrote “Saddened by the demise of former MP and Union Minister, Shri Akhilesh Das. His active contribution to public life will be remembered. RIP.”

Former badminton player, Akhilesh Das Yadav was also the chairman of Badminton Association of India. He also participated in several badminton tournaments both in the country and at international level.

Builders Association of India on twitter wrote, “We are deeply shocked and saddened by the sudden demise of our honorable President Dr Akhilesh Das Gupta. May his soul rest in peace.”
