Two days after 45-year-old police inspector posted at New Delhi’s Chittaranjan Park area shot himself with his service pistol inside the police station, his family has alleged that he took the extreme step as he was under pressure and was harassed by his seniors, a report on news channel India Today said.
Inspector Kushal Ganguly shot himself 10 minutes after he was issued the pistol from the Malkhana (store) of the police station. Kushal Ganguly had to be on duty on Thursday for Shab-e-barat procession, said police.
According to a report in Hindustan Times, Deputy commissioner of police (south-east), Romil Baaniya said Ganguly came to the office around 4:15 pm on Wednesday even when it was closed on the occasion of Buddha Purnima. He also had tea with inspector Ravinder Rajput.
“At 5.50pm, Ganguly got the pistol issued saying he will be on Shab-e-barat arrangements duty on Thursday,” said Baaniya. A senior officer said at around 6 pm Kushal Ganguly went to the bathroom and locked himself and later a gunshot was heard after which other police officials rushed to the spot and was taken to Max Saket hospital where he was declared dead upon arrival.
It was only one-and-a-half month ago when Kushal Ganguly was transferred to district investigation unit (DIU) of the south-east district police. According to DCP, Kushal Ganguly had a conversation with a friend who is known by his surname Negi. He said, “Ganguly told Negi that his mind was getting weaker and because of that he was not able to work properly. He was certainly not under workload pressure as he was only investigating four cases whereas each inspector in DIU is probing at least 20 to 25 cases”.
