The Rajasthan High Court has sent a recommendation to the Centre asking it to declare cow as a National Aimal. The HC also told the Centre to increase the length of punishment in cases of cow slaughter to life imprisonment. As of now the punishment in cases of cow slaughter varies from state to state. If found guilty of cow slaughter in Rajasthan, one can be sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000 can also be imposed. The possession and transport of cow, calf, heifer, bull or bullock is prohibited in the state.
The court has asked ACB ADG to prepare a report every three moths on cowshed and has also ordered UDH secretary and municipal commissioner to go to these cowsheds once in every month.
Mahesh Chandra Sharma, judge hearing the case, has also ordered the forest department that every year 5, 000 plants should be planted in the cowshed. The announcement has come few days after the centre has ordered a ban on the sale of cattle across India. The Centre’s order is being criticised by some states including Kerala , Karnataka and Tripura.
Last year, in a week as many as 100 cows had died in Jaipur, Rajasthan in a cowshed run by the government. After the incident came to light, the Rajasthan government had asked for a report. The cows died allegedly due to lack of proper facilities in the Hingonia Gaushala.
“The Chief Minister has asked for a report on Hingonia Gaushala. We are drafting a road map and action plan to improve the situation there,” said Rajasthan Minister Rajendra Rathore.
