A 25-year-old man who was thrashed by a mob for allegedly attempting to rape a four-year-old girl died of his injuries at a Delhi hospital this morning. Police said the girl, a resident of east Delhi’s Pandav Nagar neighbourhood, had stepped out of home on Thursday night to snack at a roadside eatery.
Golu, the young man, allegedly lured her to a deserted spot near Sanjay Lake. When the girl failed to return home, her mother began looking for her. A neighbour told her he had seen Golutake the girl towards the lake.
When the mother and a group of local people reached the spot, they allegedly found the accused forcing himself on the girl. A mob attacked Golu with stones and batons and kept hitting him till he fell unconscious, a police officer said.
After the police learnt about the incident, they rushed Golu to hospital. His body was handed over to his family today. The police have not been able to identify those who thrashed Golu.
Officers have, however, dismissed allegations from Golu’s family that he was killed by a gang for resisting a robbery. Golu, who hailed from Basti in Uttar Pradesh, lived in the Shashi Garden locality near Pandav Nagar. Police sources said he was addicted to alcohol and drugs.
