Animals in the Delhi Zoo seem to be living in a sad state. As per the latest records, 171 animals have lost their lives in the last one year in the zoo. This is the highest number of deaths that the Delhi zoo has seen in the recent times. The unfortunate number has also led to the National Zoological Park in Delhi to be rated as the zoo with the highest mortality across all major zoos in the country in the past one year.

According to a report published in Hindustan Times, one of the officials of the Central Zoo Authority said, “At least 171 animals have died in the zoo in the past one year. This is probably the highest among all large zoos in the country. In most other large zoos the death toll on an average is less than 50 during the same period”.

As per the sources, most of the animals who have died since last year at a zoo in Delhi include birds, deer and antelopes. On the basis of animal population, the number of visitors, the area of the zoo, they are classified into three categories: large, medium and small zoos. Delhi zoo is among the large zoos in the country.

“While more than 170 animals died in the Delhi zoo, the Vandalur Zoo recorded the second highest death toll in the country – 98. In most other large zoos, which have till now compiled this year’s figures, the death toll is below 50,” said an official of the Central Zoo Authority.
